This is a little bit of a departure from the usual tone here. I’m just in love with presidential pets! Here are some highlights.

The Clinton cat Socks was abandoned in favor of Buddy the dog, for whom Socks showed considerable hostility during the presidency. President Clinton was said to have made more progress between the Israelis and Palestinians than between the two animals.

FDR’s terrier Fala is part of White House pet lore for his unwavering dedication to the wartime president as well as for his supposed hand in turning the election in favor of his master. As the story goes, Roosevelt left him behind in one of the Aleutian Islands and had to turn his warships around to retrieve little Fala, prompting taxpayer criticism and Roosevelt’s famous indignant response to the press. (As a side note, Fala is such a great dog name! If I had Fala, I’d make sure I got another one to call Fel.)

And then there are President George W. Bush’s pair of terriers, Miss Beazley and Barney, who had their own official dot-gov websites. At a low point Barney bit a reporter, perhaps in response to the kind of press the president was getting at the end of his term. I admit I have spent an insane amount of time looking at their pictures.

There are other pets that are less famous but more unexpected. It’s hard to think of LBJ as poetic or restrained, but he had two beagles he called Him and Her. Famously upstanding George Washington owned Drunkard and Tipsy, and the disgraced Nixon not only had Checkers (of Checkers speech fame) but also King Timahoe, Pasha, and Vicky. And in true Camelot style, JFK’s daughter Caroline got her very own pony, Macaroni, as well as Zsa Zsa the rabbit and a kennel of dogs. It’s no wonder Hoover didn’t do so well with that whole Depression thing. Can you trust a man who had two alligators?

Finally, there is Bo, the relatively new Obama dog. Bo has gotten more media attention than any other First Dog, maybe because modern media is so persistent, so everywhere and entirely intent on being inane: does Bo get that he’s famous? Are we for cats at all?

—
Pictures of Bo and his family at the highly addictive Official White House Flickr

It isn’t the only outdoors store with that eco-friendly yuppy personality, so it’s probably the website that really makes the difference for me. Their pictures just seem to satisfy so many visceral needs at once by making me imagine that I too could stand on a mountainous tightrope and get photographed for National Geographic while looking attractive in a sleek down jacket or stretchy dress that doesn’t wrinkle, retain moisture or need laundering.

While all of those things are wonderful, the real Patagonia secret is luggage. They have a line called MLC (maximum legal carry-on) that’s now legendary for being rugged, pretty, and, most importantly, structurally sound while accommodating a surprising amount of stuff for 4-5 day trips. The Burrito style MLC is supposed to be great for people who need things to not get wrinkled. (I’ve never tried it, but I can attest that the regular MLC is pretty amazing. Look for it in lime green.)

There is something unbelievably frou frou and decadent about spending tens, even hundreds, on a notebook that’s luxuriously bound, embossed, engraved, maybe gilded. So I am lucky I don’t have a particular desire to keep pen and paper diaries, or else my wallet will probably run away of its own accord for fear of being dramatically fleeced every year.

But what I can’t get over about Smythson is its amazing line of Nancy handbags. They’ve done this for several seasons now and have several variations on the theme, but these dimpled, unbelievaby chic (and let’s face the fact that most trendy bags are not that) faces practically appear in my dreams, beckoning me across the pond in the yacht I don’t have and supplanting that other quintessentially British fashion house as the one that counts in my book (the Smythson one I’ll never afford).

An interesting fact about this Smythson renaissance by way of its handbags is that the creative director responsible for everything is David Cameron’s wife, Samantha. I’ve had a sort of a political crush on him and, now, something more like unbridled adulation for her.
